Radio Dan Show Commercial?

Recently one of TalkRadioX’s loyal listeners, Creeto (his blog is linked on the right hand side of this page), made a commercial for my show.

It’s very strange that someone would just do this, but I must admit I do keep watching this.  And it gets more bizarre each time.

Mondays Are Twice As Nice…and Long

If you pay attention to TalkRadioX then this is old news.

Mondays The Radio Dan Show is a whopping two hours long!  That’s right there’s now more of me to love.  Or if you listen to the replay then Tuesdays at 2pm you’ll notice that I’m doing extra duty.

I’m not sure how long this will last.  So far I’ve two Mondays this way and honestly it’s a lot of fun.   It’s certainly feels like a challenge to have that much to talk about.   I’m only taking the one break at the top of the hour so we’ll see how long that lasts.

Recently I was listening The Dan LeBatard Show on 790 AM here in South Florida. My favorite radio show by far.  Dan had announced they were doing one hour commercial free but would do a couple of live spots.  So I thought this would be great until they played a Letterman clip that was about 5 minutes long.  The rest of the hour was pretty cluncky.  I hope that’s not how I’m sounding.

The Live Test Show will now be doing two hours on Friday nights starting at 8pm, so everything balances out.   Go on now, tell some friends.

Part of the Frontier

Shockingly I was named in Talkers Magazine as one of their “Frontier Fifty: A selection of outstanding talk media webcasters.

This is the first year they’ve made this list and it’s really cool to be apart of it.  Even cooler is that a number of my collegues from TalkRadioX made the cut as well.  Antubert, Tyler Hollywood, Dr. Rock and Sir Darryl are all listed as well.

It’s a little strange to see us TRXers listed with the likes of Rush, Hannity, Dr. Laura, et. all.  Strange but none the less cool.

Affiliation is not easy

Getting affiliates is no easy task, even when you’re a major radio star like me.

Late I’m feeling like the fuller brush man when it comes to lining up stations to play The Radio Dan Show and other TRX programming.   As it stands I’m very grateful for the five stations that are playing the show, however that is not nearly enough.

The holy grail still is to get a LPFM to pick me and Jess up.  The Part 15 stations we have are great.  But an LPFM is a step closer to legitimacy.  So go ahead and write your local station demanding they play some Radio Dan Show in your town.

Tavares Watch 2009 Update

Last night the Islanders lost (again!) in Calgary 5-2 to inch closer to finishing the season last over all.  Unfortunately so did Tampa Bay and Ottawa.  But the good news is that Atlanta won which puts them a big fat five points ahead of the Islanders.

RIP Newspapers?

The new media is coming. It’s probably already here.

Last week a major nail in the coffin of newspapers was hammered home by scores of layoffs from newspaper giant Gannett (you check out the bloody details at the Gannett blog. Today it was reported that The Miami Herald is for sale from the McClatchy Group. Of course with the decline of newspapers making so much news itself you have to wonder who would be willing to pony up for the Miami Herald.

It also makes me think perhaps newspaper owners will be the next to ask for some government help. After standing in line behind Ford and GM they can ask for a handout too. But instead of a billion dollars they should ask congress to turn back the clock to 1960.

It’s not as though none of us didn’t see it coming. In fact wasn’t all this supposed to have happened by now? A few years ago podcasting was the new media that was destined to generate revenue and become a force in the world. Instead it’s a slow progress to say the least. Satellite radio is another piece of the new media that was supposed to take hold. Right Sirius is trading on the NASDAQ for about 15 cents. Of course that is a lot better than terrestrial radio’s Westwood One which is trading at about 2 cents a share on the OTCBB. Great time to be doing a radio show!

Even network television is feeling the crunch. Call it the recession if you want, but the eroding audience of the networks has been a long time coming. Yesterday NBC (which seems to be imploding) said they’d do away with 10pm programming and instead stick Jay Leno in that timeslot. This was right after NBC president Jeff Zucker said that perhaps NBC shouldn’t be broadcasting every night of the week. Sure Jeff, take a few nights off. Hang low with the CW. How programmer Ben Silverman keeps his job is beyond me. Hey Ben give me a call. I’d love to chat.

As a member of the new media (ya I blog and do some dog and pony net radio show so that’s gotta count for something) it’s all very interesting to see. It’s also very sad. I feel as though I’
I really don’t know where we’re going to be in 10 years with media, though I have a feeling everyone will rolling with iphones that can do just about everything eventually.

People on the subways riding into work with their cup of joe in one hand and an iphone in the other reading…well hell. If the papers are gone just what will they be reading? The Huffington Post? The Radio Dan Blog?

Affiliate Mania!

Well, mania may be a little extreme, but it sounds good.

TalkRadiox already has an FM outlet with the Detour Talk, a micro FM that has several transmitters up and plans for a tower in a future.  So far relationship was gone very well, with lots of feedback in the two months or so we’ve been on there.

Now, TRX has added two new Part 15 AM affiliates.  1700 AM in Albany, Oregon and 1650 AM in McKinney, TX.  Oh sure both of these stations may be broadcasting out about 5 blocks or so (I really don’t know).  But it shows the plan that we have at TRX is really starting to move along.

Hopefully we can continue to add more of these Part 15 outlets as TRX grows.  Creating a network of original content and syndicating it out (think NPR or Pacifica) is what we’re aiming for.

The signals may be small, but the potential is big.

Just What You Need: More Of Me!

Tonight on TalkRadioX, there is a really great line up of shows.  I’m hoping this keeps up because it’s really unique and there’s not a lot of other places offering what we are.

I’ve written about The Freelancer, the in house produced radio drama, before.  Tonight at 10pm EST is another new episode, and in a personal victory it’s the second one in a row, and I’m hoping this catches on.  At least to a certain degree.

Following that is the original radio comedy show, Radio Meatsauce, at 11pm EST.  This has turned out far better than I would have hoped and as long as Arnold and company can keep it up, I’m all for it.

And then at midnight EST, The TRX Weekly Report does it live for the first time.  What was a Talk Soup like-podcast is now a live show that will still feature clips from the previous week from all the different TRX hosts (well, those that submitted them) but will also serve as a broadcasting round table of sorts.  I’m hosting along with Antubert and it should be fun.  Self-indulgent but fun.

TRX on FM in JC, TN

This week the home station for The Radio Dan Show, TalkRadioX, has been asked to provide the overnight programming for a low-powered FM unit operating out of Johnson City, TN.

This is a pretty neat thing.  So basically how this works is that midnight to 9am on weekdays and midnight to noon on weekends, 105.3 WETX in Johnson City will playing TalkRadioX.  I have no idea how many people listen to WETX but the idea that someone can be driving through town and listening to me and Jess argue is cool.

WETX serves Johnson City but the signal is also relayed throoughout what is known as the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee.  So Kingsport, TN and Bristol, VA can also tune in but more than likely it’s at a different spot on the dial than 105.3.

So we at TalkRadioX are still taking baby steps two years in, and here is the first step on terrestrial radio.  Let’s hope a few more steps follow.
